NATURAL BORN SUCKER & DARIA BLAX Interview by stevvi.

I think this interview was started sometime late last year so I apologise to the Sucker and Daria for getting constantly side tracked and being a lazy git - stevvi.

Who are you? What music have you made? Where do you live? What's it Like there, in general and for music?

DARIA: When I was a little girl my daddy used to buy me all the Chipmunks Christmas records because I was a fanatic. I had to have them all and I think I did. I would listen to them endlessly until my mother would finally make them disappear. I also remember playing everything at 45+ some finger pitch as well. Ay, my parents used to buy me all the 7" records from all the mailing services available. The first record I bought with my own money was Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and it was called "We're only in it for the Money". It's around this time that I realized I was a freakin' music maniac.

I like too many artists to start naming them. I usually give a list of labels instead but even that is getting too long now. Let's just say that I like techno with balls :o) Fast, slow, minimal, total mayhem, distortion, hey ! I'm there man! My most profound admiration goes to Martin Damm (SpeedFreak, etc.)... and the original Chipmunks of course.

I like danger and mystery and I think I'm an impossible character. Only the Natural Porn Foker can tolerate me for long periods of time but not all the time. That is why I usually interact with machinery. It's a lot safer.

I feel there is a lack of nobility (of spirit and action) in the techno scene. That is why I prefer to ride the side line. Nobility is the only quality I look for in individuals and I've been deceived too often. I don't believe in PLUR and togetherness and happy-happy-joy-joy-glo-zippi-di-doo-da-day shit. You can bust your ass for years for free to help promote a scene in your town and end up being snubbed and ignored just because you don't wear the right foken' pants and sneakers or because you refuse to say that DJ-Flavor-Of-The-Month-Joe is good because he fokin' sux. Hell, I'm way passed caring !

Here, that's about the way it goes. It's all fashion. Fashion of clothing, of attitude, of being seen at the right place with the right people and in as many media as possible. Getting grants from government or cultural associations to make books about the rave scene, films about the techno scene, magazines about people who made books and films about... Intellectualization of a gut trip. What a downer.

The hard techno scene is still very small and mostly French. But it's growing (hmmm! is it really?.... not so sure after all... - last time I checked it seemed like self destruction was steadily creeping in there... It's hard to explain... fragmentations, inflated egos, juvenile disputes, you name it, it's happening). Hopefully, this is only temporary. I can only speak for ourselves and I hope the Special Corn Sucker and I will get better and better and escape all these petty rivalries and reach a far better place on cloud Burger Queen where we will happily stuff our rap machines 'till we explode and are never heard from again... amen.

Anyway we should try to see the world before we die. So if you want to invite us to play at your party or to sample your cooking, watch videos or go to the cinema (we're Natural Popcorn Butter by the way), or even clean your garage... we're darn efficient.

NATURAL TORN ZIPPER ADDS: ...YEP ! also we did a live set the other week-end in a cool party and it was fun and great to see that there is still people into more experimental stuff. since we were a bit disconnected lately from the "scene" (god i hate that word) all we could see was the more commercial stuff that gets pushed down our throat. Now that was freaky !

It's not that commercial music is bad per se, it's the sharks that use It for their own end that make it so, but it takes all the fucking room and they works real hard to make people believe that it's the only thing that's happening and all for the wrong reasons (moooooney, instant fame and self ego adoration). People should be able to choose what they want.

It's not everybody that has time and energy to do research into all the kinds of art forms they might enjoy so that's why i think it's low to take advantage of it to your own end.

As far as who I am, I'm somebody who spends his life fucking around With musical gear to make music. Don't ask me why, I don't know. It's a Passion I guess. Maybe it's because it's a way to communicate using mechanical Or electronic devices.

DARIA: Oh yea! you want to know what music we did...hmm... not much. Actually we did a lot of different things always under different names and some of it is strictly TOP SECRET because, as I said earlier I like mystery ;-) We did industrial, experimental, ambient, minimal, hardcore, techno, Drum & Bass (Dumb & Boring - heehee), and what you heard on DropBass which could be called something like hybrid-psychedelic-tribal-fuckt-up-saturday-afternoon-with-too-much-to-smoke ?!?!?! (by the way, it's got a harder edge live than on the record). Some of the stuff have been released on various labels like for example: DropBass (USA), Labworks (Germany), Source (Germany - Hi, guys :-)), etc... or on tapes.
Since we started this interview something else came out.... it's a remix of one of Yves' tracks by Rob Acid (Junkfood Records). It's called "Junkyard" and it's on Braintist Records (Germany).

So uhmm where was it that you live?

DARIA: We are from Montreal in Quebec. We speak mostly French but we understand English awright being the States' neighbor.

NATURAL GORE SUCKER: We live in a cat house. We're the cats butlers. We open doors for them, serve cat food & drinks, empty the cat litter, run errands to go get their food, entertain them (cats have a very big psychedelic temper). They're the boss the bastards. Actually it's them who do the music. The cat House is made of wood, dry walls and red bricks with electric heating (statement taken from insurance company form).

How did you 2 get to meet each other?

DARIA: We ran into the same cheeseboyga at Burger King.

What's the connection with Germany?

NATURAL FORM FILLER: Phone and fax... Actually, there is no real connection. We have records on German labels because we send them tapes and they choose to release some of our tracks and that's it. It's been mostly the same with every label we released on. We never know exactly how we do or what people think. It's very hard to get an idea of what Europe thinks of our tunes from here. We hope it's not too bad :o) There was no hype, no bullshit, the guys liked the music so they released it. Since we didn't know each other beforehand it's pretty much through the music that the connection was made. Very flattering for us actually. It was the same with Kurt Eckes of Drop Bass. He liked two of the tracks, two more were added later on and zap!

OK, it sounds like you're kinda secluded in Montreal… how do you get to hear of new tunes, new labels and new people?

NATURAL PORN LICKER: Yea, it's true that it kind of sounds like that and it's a bit true these days since we're working a lot on new tracks and the live set (that set is like always in construction) but you know Daria did work for several years in a little independent record store. It was the first one to have techno music in town in the late 80', Some of the customers were a bit uneasy about it (for some people changes are scary), but the owner (DJ RobAir), with Daria's help, sticked to it and imported the greatest tracks and stacked them in that little anonymous store of his. He's still there and it's where we still get all kinds of great music. We spend whole afternoons in that store drinking coffee, listening to cool music, drinking coffee, buying some vinyl, drinking coffee, shooting the breeze and of course drinking coffee. Him and some friends did organize some real good parties and we gave some help when we could and got to meet all kinds of crazy people.

What about the Net?

NOCTURNAL GHETTO BLASTER: The net is a drug... heheheh! Well beside the obvious (faster communication, possibilities for real free speech, etc) the net can be like a mind to mind connection. By staying quite anonymous on line, two persons can exchange ideas and knowledge without having prejudices like race, age, looks, gender (specially that one) getting in the way. Even on the phone the tone of the voice can influence you. Since you don't see the person's face you can misjudge that person's intentions. With the net, it's almost like having your brain directly connected to the net!!!

I don't think big corporations would like that angle very much since today's marketing techniques rely a lot on looks, social status, income, and so on. You name it. At the same time it's still very important to be around people. The net is a great way to keep in touch with what's going on and have an active part in shaping the evolution of all aspects of human interactions. Civilization is going forward and adding the net will blend a lot of different cultures and ways of doing and seeing things and hopefully have crazier and bolder music coming out of the head of nut cases all over the world. Good way to have your music spread a bit too :0). It'll hopefully help us to establish new contacts. We're a bit new to the net actually. One thing I really hate is those pretentious sites where you get all that bullshit thrown at you. It's kind of pathetic actually. I don't think they fool a lot of people. Well I hope not, otherwise we're not out of the shit bucket yet!!!

DARIA: Dese dayz I wanna shoot da net an skor fo da teem, diggit?

You say you play harder live, is this intentional? And where the Hell do you play??

DARIA: We play in Hell }: >
Lately we were at "Even Furthur" in the Midwest (the annual Drop Bass / Mushgroove/Parotic music 4-days long party).... that's outside of town for a change....

NUCLEAR ZONE RIDER...It's more or less intentional that the set is harder. In a one hour and fifteen minutes set there's a lot you can throw in. I try to do a bit like a DJ set; a nonstop set, start somewhere, go there to do that then switch around and go darker, accelerate a bit, go through this track and loop there to go nuts with effects, come out of it faster and so on, it's a bit like writing a story and to make the "story" work you use what you need to make it go somewhere and harder stuff has definitively a place to create certain kinds of emotions that you might need for your story. The other reason ( the non intellectual bullshit one) is because we like hardcore a lot and since all the stuff in the set fits quite well with the harder sound, we may as well go for it. Another reason is that it's mainly the mufffuka who are into hardcore who buy and play our tracks (even the stuff that's not that hard) so we played in the hardcore events here in town and also because Daria can never get enough of the hard and fast.

Also we're actually working on a short set of "ambient noize" for a C.B.C. radio show that is specialized in electronic music but into a more industrial sound. We're gonna play it live on the air. That one is gonna be real harsh.

What's C. B .C. ?

NATURAL HORN CLEANER: It's stand for CANADIAN BROADCAST CORPORATION. DARIA: It's the equivalent of the B.B.C. or is it Country Baking Contest???

I hear the Natural Born Sucker is a good cook… is this true?

DARIA: Hmmm.... He makes great cheeseboygaz (specially when he does the tamari mushrooms filling - the way I prefer). He's also great with soups (... not the girlie bouillon kind. The real thick manly ones with loadz of vegetables or the meaty ones... oh yea, I'm a lucky dawg). He can also be fancy (hee hee hee) and do fine cuisine but we're more into eating than just lifting our small fingers so... All this doesn't mean that we're pigs that eat only junk. Au contraire, we eat well, lots of greens, big salads etc... lots of experiment with herbs too... just like music :o)))

Cool! Where's my invite? We talked about the Net a little earlier on. I know it's an obvious question but what do you see as technology's role in our "Global" society… do you have a vision of the future?

MULTINATIONAL FOOD SUPPLIER: Your invite? Well , you're more than welcome :0)
Everybody is welcome to eat like pigs and sample all the great food of The universe and then we'll blow our head off with the craziest moddafukka music around. All that will remain of hunanity will be a bunch of full stomachs hanging around trying to open all those wine bottles. Then the livers could join in and dance like crazy, trying to deal with all the toxins, kicking them in the arse and of course, the kick drums would be supplied by ten thousand hearts beating in unison. Wow, what a great party that'd be! The brains could take care of all that technology. Now imagine an alien coming to our world... what he or she or wathever would do? Wouldn't it be great if they had three stomachs each? Hey feet & hands bring more wine :0D Of course assholes are not invited. Anyway, they're worth shit at repairing computers.

DARIA: Geezzz! Watta question! ... and in what delerium has my sucker Friend fell??? Well, I can only talk for myself. I'm so unimpressed with Society and so lazy when it comes to understanding new technology but there is hardly an hour that I don't finger something that has it's plug in the wall. It's the constant evolution of technology that tires me.
Sometimes I think stores should put a trash can right next to the cash register 'cause when you buy a piece of equipment, specialy computer related, it's obsolete the moment you paid for it. Sometimes it feels like trying to fit the round puzzle piece into the square shape. Instead of changing piece, I cut the damn thing into a square. Society hates me for fuckin her puzzle. I just wish she'd chill sometimes and stop constantly try to test or Impress me. I see the future as I see a cheap slut: it makes me laugh and I like to watch.

MUTUAL BOND SUCKER: About technology, (it's not such an easy question, Not so obvious if you really think about it) I kind of agree with HECATE Of ZHARK RECORDS in the interview you did with her: Everybody should have access or at least a minimum of access to it otherwise it won't really be a global society. Nobody should be allowed to take control of any advancement in any form because experience shows us that it's never done for the better being of the human race but always for greed and power. I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to that aspect of technology. I use it a lot myself so it's not the machines themselves that I'm afraid of.
